About Us

The Highland County Humane Society is located 2 1/2 miles east of Hillsboro, OH on St. Rt. 124. We are a non-profit, no-kill shelter which provides a safe haven for dogs and cats while they transition from their past lives to their future, forever homes. We are a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization first organized in 1969 and guided by a dedicated board.

OUR PURPOSE is the preservation of humane principals for the prevention of cruelty or neglect of animals and to cooperate with all other similar societies in such efforts.

The POLICY of the Highland County Humane Society is to give humane care and treatment to all animals in the Society’s service area needing shelter; to try to return lost animals to their owners and to try to find good homes for animals without owners.

The MISSION STATEMENT of the Humane Society is to provide a temporary home and treatment for adoptable cats and dogs, return lost animals to their owners when possible, place them in suitable homes, increase awareness of the humane treatment of animals and promote spay and neuter programs to reduce the over-population of cats and dogs in Highland County.

Highland County Humane Society relies solely on donations and largely on volunteers to do vital work in the community. So many animals in Highland County need a loving home. Please consider adopting from Highland County Humane Society instead of buying one from a breeder or pet market.
